Claude Buddy FAQ
Answers to common questions: how to disable, mute, check token usage, find your UUID, and troubleshoot issues.
How do I turn off Claude Buddy?
/buddy off hides it from the terminal. Use /buddy mute to silence speech bubbles without removing it entirely.
How many tokens does it cost?
Each buddy interaction session costs approximately 3,986 tokens. You can minimize usage by muting (/buddy mute) or turning off (/buddy off).
How many species are there?
There are 18 species: duck, goose, blob, cat, dragon, octopus, owl, penguin, turtle, snail, ghost, axolotl, capybara, cactus, robot, rabbit, mushroom, and chonk.
Can I change my buddy?
Not officially. Your buddy is deterministically tied to your account UUID. However, community reroll tools exist — see our reroll guide for details.
Is my buddy the same on every device?
Yes. Your buddy is determined by your account UUID, which stays the same regardless of device or platform.
What is a Shiny buddy?
Shiny is a 1% visual variant with a golden shimmer effect, independent of rarity. A Shiny Legendary is a 0.01% chance.
Why can't I see /buddy?
You need Claude Code v2.1.89 or later and an active Pro subscription ($20/mo). Run claude --version to check.
What does each stat do?
The 5 stats (DEBUGGING, PATIENCE, CHAOS, WISDOM, SNARK) influence your buddy's personality and conversation style. See our attributes guide for full details.
How do I find my UUID?
Run: grep accountUuid ~/.claude.json — use accountUuid preferably. See our UUID guide for step-by-step instructions.
Will my buddy survive Claude Code updates?
The "bones" (appearance, species, stats) are tied to your UUID and persist. However, if you used a reroll tool, the custom salt may be reset on update.
Why does it say "buddy is unavailable on this configuration"?
Claude Buddy requires the Claude Code CLI terminal (not VS Code's built-in terminal extension), an active Pro or Max subscription, and Claude Code v2.1.89 or later. Check all three if you see this message.
What does Claude Buddy actually do?
Claude Buddy is a decorative ASCII companion that sits beside your terminal prompt. It doesn't affect code generation quality or output. It reacts when you pet it, shows speech bubbles with personality-driven comments, and generates sharable buddy cards. Think of it as a Tamagotchi for your terminal.
