What is Claude Buddy?
Claude Buddy is a terminal pet built into Claude Code (v2.1.89+). Type /buddy in the CLI to hatch yours. Your buddy is deterministically generated from your account UUID: same account = same pet. Requires Pro subscription ($20/mo). Each interaction costs ~3,986 tokens.

Rarity Tiers
Five tiers determine your buddy's base stats, hat eligibility, and bragging rights.
Change Your Buddy
Your buddy is deterministically generated from your account UUID, so there's no official way to change it. However, the community has built several reroll tools (like any-buddy with 325+ stars on GitHub) that modify the local salt to give you a different result.

What is Claude Buddy?
Claude Buddy is a terminal Tamagotchi built into Claude Code. Run /buddy to hatch a random pet companion with unique species, rarity, and personality.
How many species are there?
18 species: duck, goose, blob, cat, dragon, octopus, owl, penguin, turtle, snail, ghost, axolotl, capybara, cactus, robot, rabbit, mushroom, and chonk.
What are the rarity tiers?
5 tiers: Common (60%), Uncommon (25%), Rare (10%), Epic (4%), Legendary (1%).
Can I change my buddy?
Your buddy is deterministic (tied to your account UUID). Community reroll tools exist — see our reroll guide.
Does Claude Buddy cost extra tokens?
Buddy interactions cost approximately 3,986 tokens per session. You can mute with /buddy mute.
Does /buddy work in VS Code?
Claude Buddy requires the Claude Code CLI terminal. It doesn't work directly inside VS Code's built-in terminal extension — you need to run Claude Code as a standalone CLI in your system terminal.
Will my buddy survive updates?
Your buddy's core identity (species, rarity, stats) is deterministically tied to your account UUID and will persist across updates. However, community reroll tools that modify the salt may reset after a CLI update.
How do I turn off /buddy?
Use /buddy off to hide your buddy from the terminal, or /buddy mute to keep it visible but silent. Both are reversible — run /buddy to bring it back anytime.
